The Alumni Association will be hosting the Green & Glow Winterfest (January 29 -31, 2015) to celebrate their centennial. The outdoor celebrations include snow installations, media art, fire, performance and spectacle.
The Student Design Association is participating in this event with a call for submissions for Warming Huts. We are looking for 2 teams of designers to submit proposals for temporary structures that act as warming stations, gathering places, and inspiration for perspectives on living in our winter climate.
Warming huts are typically enclosed spaces that use passive solar energy to heat a thermal mass inside, warming the hut. In addition to the practicality of creating a warming effect, the huts are intended to be aesthetically pleasing, modular, and mobile. A specific visual language should be used to communicate physical warmth and draw people in.
The Huts will be placed in a semi circle around a fire pit in a section in Quad.
Size: The structure cannot exceed a stand-alone building that has an area over 10 square metres (107 sq feet) or is over 4.3 meters (14 ft) in height.
Heat: Consider how heat can be generated and retained. There cannot be an exposed heating element.
