MADE is Edmonton’s design culture catalyst—uniting people, disciplines, and ideas to shape a city that works better, feels better, and belongs to everyone.

Design Makes Cities Work, Feel, And Last.
Good design doesn’t just improve the way a city looks—it transforms how it’s experienced.
It shapes how we move through space, how we gather, how we solve problems, and how we imagine what’s next. It’s both practical and poetic. Strategic and human.
MADE exists to ensure that design has a voice in shaping Edmonton’s future.
For over 25 years, we’ve brought together architects, designers, artists, and citizens to ask: what kind of city do we want to build—together?

Design is behind nearly everything in a city—buildings, signage, public spaces, housing, infrastructure, culture. But more than just what’s visible, design is how systems work and how people interact with and experience them.
Design is a civic tool. It can increase accessibility, reduce waste, and strengthen community.
Design is a cultural force. It expresses identity, values, and belonging.
Design is for public good. When done well, it serves everyone.
Design drives prosperity. Thoughtful design sparks innovation, attracts investment, and supports resilient local economies.
In short: cities designed with intention are cities that work better—for more people, for longer.

A Design Culture, Built Here.

Founded in 2000 by Edmonton architects and designers, MADE began as a response to a clear need — stronger design discourse, better resources for practitioners, and more ways for the public to engage with the ideas shaping their city.
Over time, as Edmonton’s design culture has grown, our focus has shifted from building a community to improving it. Through initiatives like BarnRaise Edmonton, Sheltered | Exposed, and Edmonton Design Week, we showcase exceptional local work and explore the broader role of design in civic life.
Today, we’re asking bigger questions — about our responsibilities on Treaty 6 territory, design’s role in tackling climate change and inequality, and how our profession can help diversify Edmonton’s economy. MADE exists to convene these conversations, champion bold ideas, and keep making things happen.
